Surrounded by Majestic Hills and the plains bordered by colourful sea-shores, fringed with coconut trees and paddy fields, here and there are few elevated patches of red cliffs with undulating valleys and plains between the mountainous terrain and the sea - coast, lies the district, 'Kanyakumari'. With an area of 1672 sq.km. it occupies 1.29% of the total extent of Tamil Nadu. It ranks first in literacy among other districts in Tamil Nadu. Kanyakumari weather highlights the pleasant and delightful atmospheric conditions of the district. All round the year the climactic condition of the place remains comfortable and thus the residents of Kanyakumari get the opportunity to enjoy favorable weather. This wonderful district is located between 8° 03' and 8° 35' of the north Latitudes and 77° 15' and 77° 36' of the east longitudes.
Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of peninsular India and the meeting point of three oceans-the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is famous for its beautiful views of sunrise and sunset over the waters. The multicolored sand is a unique feature of the beach here.

Gandhi Mandapam is constructed at the spot where the urn containing the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was kept for public view before a portion of its contents was immersed in the three seas. It resembles an Oriyan temple and was designed so that on Gandhiji's birthday (2nd October), the sun's rays fall on the place where his ashes were kept.

Vivekananda Memorial is about 500 meters away from mainland. This memorial stands on one of two rocks separated by about 70 meters. It was built in 1970. This memorial is dedicated to Swami Vivekananda, the greatest social reformer. Swamy Vivekananda was supposed to have medicated on the rock where the memorial stands today. The design of the mandapam incorporates different styles of temple architecture from all over India. It houses a statue of Vivekananda.

The Padmanabhapuram Palace in Kanyakumari district, located about 15 km from Nagercoil has the rare distinction of being one of the most ancient monuments in South India. Known for its strategic planning and military architecture, the palace was the seat of power for the Travancore emperors till 1790, when the capital was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram by Karthika Thirunal Maharaja, popularly known as Dharma Raja. Its main attraction is its sheer aesthetic beauty, innovative designs and time tested wooden carvings. 

The Udayagiri fort is located at a distance of 14kms. from Nagercoil. This was the vital military station of the Travancore rulers, when Padmanabapuram was capital of Travancore. It was stated to have been originally built in the year 1600 AD, and then Marthanda varma rebuilt it. It is stated that a brass gun of 16 feet long bored found inside the fort could not be moved even a few years by1200 persons with the help of 19 elephants.

Thirparappu falls is a natural beauty spot attracts many tourists. It is located at a distance of 40 kms from Nagercoil. The famous beach at Muttom is located about 16 kms from Nagercoil and 32 kms from Kanyakumari. Muttom is famous for its beautiful landscaping and high rocks dipping into the sea at the beach-side.

Mathur Aqueduct or Mathur Hanging Trough is built over the Pahrali river is at adistance of about 60 km from Kanyakumari. It is one of the longest and highest aqueducts in South Asia and is also a popular tourist spot. As Kanyakumari is bordering the sea, enjoys a maritime climate all the year round. Though the summers are sweltering and the temperature may rise as high as 34.8°C. The ideal time to visit Kanyalumari would be from October to March. As far as clothing is concerned, cottons would be ideal. Make a trip to Kanyakumari and go back with some of the memorable moments.
